Meet the Teacher

Well, today is meet the teacher day at Parker's new school. I woke up this morning in a panic about having to find parking amongst all of the teachers and parents that were going to be at this thing. Unfortunately, it then occurred to me that I was a complete dumb ass because I live TWO DOORS DOWN from the dang place. I can park in MY DRIVEWAY. So, there is one worry that can leave my mind. Can you tell I have 500million things circulating around this brain of mine?
The best part of this open house thing is that we get a complete list of school supplies from the teacher. I know that many of you think, well duh. Well, that was the best part of going back to school for me when I was younger and I am now getting to do it again. There is nothing better than filling your basket to the brim with crayons, markers, pencils, rulers and all the other fun things that Target carried in those two precious aisles where 300 people attempt to cram themselves and their baskets. Maybe it is the artist in me, but I absolutely LOVE back to school shopping. Taking a close second is the coming home and labeling it all. I love that too.
I was reading the Huntley Hills handbook yesterday and was reading about how strict the attendance rule has gotten. Parents are liable for too many unexcused absence and they could face criminal charges. Don't get me wrong, I think this is a great rule. I do not forsee any unexcused absences this year and am even going to a wedding in FL by myself so that Parker doesn't miss a day of school. The reason I mention the absence rule is that it occurred to me that I am now the parent and will be able to write real honest to goodness excuse notes. Not the forged ones that I OCCASIONALLY did in high school (sorry Dad if you are reading this). It made me laugh to think that I am indeed the parent of a 5 year old. Sometimes I still sit back and wonder "Am I really a grown up now?". The thought is kinda funny. I catch myself sometimes thinking that, while Mike and I are discussing the importance of floodlights around the house or the high electric bill, that I am an adult. In the real world. I am also the adult who is staring 30 right in the eyes. I am still thinking that I am 28 although my birthday was 3 weeks ago. Oh well. Being a grown up in the real world is cooler than I ever thought it would be. Who has to know that I sleep with a cabbage patch kids pillowcase on my pillow every night? I'm a grown up and I can do what ever I want.

It still blows my mind that Parker is starting kindergarten! He's growing up so fast.
